A 6x6 foot single net, a light, open-weave fabric used on a frame to reduce the amount of light without changing its quality. It is used to take a little off a source, to reduce the brightness of an area of the frame or to balance the exposure between a face and a background.
A single net reduces the light but does not diffuse it, so shadows stay as sharp as they were. This differs from a silk, which softens the light. It is used to even out exposure across a scene, for example to reduce the sunlit foreground so a shadow area reads in the same shot. It keeps the colour of the light unchanged. A double net takes more off. The net is lightweight and passes wind well, so it is easier to hold than a solid fabric.
The net is 6 x 6ft (1.83 x 1.83m) and rigs on a 6x6 frame. A single net is the lightest of the nets, taking a modest amount off the light without changing its colour, and the open weave lets wind pass through rather than catching it like a sail.
Generic item — no single manufacturer. A 6 x 6 ft single net, an open-weave fabric that reduces light without diffusing it.
