The Sekonic L-858D Speedmaster is a handheld incident and spot light meter for cine and stills work, used by DoPs and gaffers to set exposure and balance a lit scene. It reads ambient and flash, and has a cine mode with frame rate and shutter angle settings.
On set it is the meter a DoP uses to set a key-to-fill ratio and check that a lit scene matches a given stop. Incident readings show what light falls on the subject, and the spot function reads a small area of the scene at a distance, which helps with backlit windows, skin tones and a lit background. The cine mode accepts frame rates from 1 to 1000 fps, which matters for high-speed work. It also triggers and meters flash with radio systems, which is useful on mixed stills and motion jobs.
Ambient incident range is EV -5 to 22.9, and ambient reflected range is EV -1 to 24.4. Flash incident range is f/0.5 to f/161.2, with flash durations from 1/40s to 1/55,500s. Frame rate range for ambient light is 1 to 1000 fps.
