Daylight 8x8 Black Solid

An 8x8 foot black solid, an opaque black fabric used on a mid-size frame to block light completely. It is used to flag a light off a lens or a wall, to make shade, and to create negative fill that adds contrast and shape to a subject.

A black solid removes light rather than diffusing it. Place it close to a subject and it cuts the fill from one side, which deepens the shadows. Place it between a light and the set and it removes the light from that area, so you can re-light it as you want. An 8x8 is large enough to cover a two-shot, a doorway or a window, and light enough to rig quickly on two stands. In wind, use sandbags on the stand legs.

The fabric is 8 x 8ft (2.44 x 2.44m) and rigs on an 8x8 frame. Being opaque, it blocks light entirely, so it works as a flag, a shade or a negative fill.
