A 6x6 foot black solid, an opaque black fabric used on a frame to block light completely. It is used to flag a light off a lens or a wall, to make shade, and to create negative fill that adds contrast and shape to a subject.

A black solid removes light rather than diffusing it. Place it close to a subject and it cuts the fill from one side, which deepens the shadows and sculpts the face. Place it between a light and the set and it removes the light from that area. At 6x6 it covers a single or a close-up and goes up on one stand with a frame, so it is quick to move between set-ups. In wind, use sandbags on the stand legs.

The fabric is 6 x 6ft (1.83 x 1.83m) and rigs on a 6x6 frame. Being opaque, it removes light entirely rather than reducing it, so it works as a flag, a shade or a negative fill without changing the colour of what is left.
